The Horndean Countryside in July 2007

What a mixture of weather ! Hot, cold, windy, very wet and in between a little sun, all resulting in plenty of plant growth and a very green countryside. Garden birds have been multiplying, particularly blackbirds, house sparrows and pigeons and there has been plenty of insect life for them to feed on, we had daily visits by a pair of nuthatches. Butterflies dont seem to mind the dull weather and often sit still for their photographs to be taken. Those that came on the Catherington Nature Trail walk had an opportunity to photographs insects and wildflowers, some of these pictures can be seen on the South Down Group page. The first blackberries to ripen were seen on Dell Piece West on 12th July. Here are a small selection from this months photos:-

1. A fine bloom of a Broad-leaved Helleborine at the north end of Sheepwash just within the Horndean Parish boundary.

2. The sound and sight of yellowhammers were a feature of this month here on a Blendworth hedgerow.

3. Lizards were seen sunning themselves on the wooden boardwalks on Hazleton Common and

4.Heather (Ling) was coming into flower on Hazleton Common just south of Hazleton Wood.
