The Horndean Countryside in June 2007

This month started with some fine weather, the fields and hedgerows are in full leaf and insect life abounds, we started the month seeing orchids in bloom, dragonflies, damsel flies, several interesting beetles, plenty of bumble bees, but not many hive bees and towards the end of the month an increasing number of moth species especially some smaller species and 'micro moths' many larger than 'macros' and quite a challenge to identify.

For more on beetles, moths, bees and wild flowers go to the Biodiversity pages for recent news and pictures.

Here are some of recent pictures, more can be seen on the biodiversity pages.

From left to right -
1. The four 'parish' long-horn cattle busily grazing on Hazleton Common by the ponds where
2. A beautiful blue (male) Broad-bodied Chaser was perched waiting to chase off an Emperor dragonfly,
3. A Southern Marsh orchid, spotted by countryside ranger Oliver at Dell Piece West and
4. The only Bee orchid seen in Horndean so far this year growing on a grass verge on the Hazleton estate and partly beheaded by the last grass mowing session. All these pictures were taken on the 1st June 2007.
