The Horndean Countryside in March 2008

March has started with some fine dry weather and as in February some really fine sunsets and skyscapes. On the 1st March it was very windy, this brought down a number of branches and twigs, just the time to study lichens and in many of the local ponds frogsare really have a gay time swimming around in masses of frog spawn.

The following pictures were all taken on the 1st March. (1) and (2) Frogs and spawn in our wild garden pond.(3) Lichens Cladonia on an ash tree in Yoells'Copse (4)Ending the day with a sunset taken from a field to the north of the 'Bird in Hand' pub in Lovedean Lane.

After a fine start March has turned showery and very windy with a number of branches coming down, we have however spotted the first bluebells in flower, (5) this one was seen in the Holt on the 3rd March, by the 6th March a several were in bloom in Yoell's Copse where Wood Anemones were also coming into flower. (6) as seen in Yoell's Copse on 12th March. (7) Also on the same day Buckler Ferns were sending up new leaves.

(8) A good amount of dead rotting wood in Yoell's makes a habitat for numerous invertebrates and many logs are now coverd with a coating of moss. The woodland flower is still covered with a thick layer of oak leaves this year.
