The Horndean Countryside in November 2007

This month has made a good start with some warm clear dry days and my monthly gallery starts with some pictures taken in Yoell's Copse on the 3rd November when Jon Stokes from the Tree Council paid a visit to see some of the interesting hybrid native trees now showing their autumn colours up in the high forest canopy.

1. and 2. Oak hybrids with some exceptionaly large leaves and a Wild Service tree hybrid. 3. and 4. Afternoon sun penetrating Yoell's Copse along the main path around this delightful fragment of Ancient Woodland.

By the end of October most of the leaves had fallen from Ash trees but the Beech and Oak were just beginning to colour up for a fine autumn display. Our pictures show some beech in Havant Thicket and along Catherington Lane.

As usual the Field Maples in the Horndean area have shown a beautiful golden colour, some particularly fine colours can be seen on the slip road around to Morrison's supermarket.

Now is the time for the conservation volunteers to help tidy up the countryside with a bit of scrub bashing and a fine bonfire at Heydon Woods also including removal of sycamore and hawthorn at Catherington Down on a very wet morning.
