This month we have celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the Great Storm in the early hours of the 16th October 1987, well remembered as it was my birthday ! One good outcome soon after was the start of the Tree Warden Scheme. For more details click on the Tree Warden page. Most of my attention this month has been devoted to a detailed survey of the trees in Yoell's Copse where many rare and unusual native trees can be found. For more information click on Local Areas/Yoells Copse, Lovedean.
This month's Gallery has pictures all taken from 14th to 17th October and shows (1) Our lone deer in the fields in Blendworth. (2) and (3) Wild Service tree, fallen leaves and looking into the canopy.(4) A late flowering of Nettle-leaved Bellflower and Verbascum in the field south of Pyle Farm. (5), (6) and (7) A wasp, Speckled Wood butterfly and a Scorpion fly enjoying the late autumn sun at Dell Piece West and finally (8) A sunny morning at DPW showing healthy growth on the oaks! Many young oaks are springing up and some, not more than 20 years old have produced a fine crop of acorns.

The Horndean Countryside in late October 2007
As October draws to its end the folowing pictures were all taken on the 29th October.
(9) A peaceful view of Yoell's Copse in the late afternoon sun where we are currently doing a tree survey, more can be seen on the Yoell's Copse page. (10) An interesting ladybird seen in YC. Is it a two spot gone negative or new alien ? Are there any experts on ladybirds out there, I would be glad to hear(11) This attractive 'green' fungus was seen in Wick Hanger amongst beech logs, I think it is Clitocybe odora and has a strong smell of aniseed. It has been a good month for fungi and many more can be seen on the recently updated Biodiversity - Fungi page. (12) Our two favourite trees by Woodhouse Lane in Blendworth. Note that all the ash leaves have now fallen but the oak is still fully clothed, also note the promise of spring where winter wheat is now coming up, giving the countryside a lovely spring green look.
Whatever changes and dramas lay ahead let us pray that our natural world will survive and remain such a beautiful and tranquil place for us to enjoy.
